Home backup is decided by surge, not capacity. Your fridge compressor spikes to 400W+ on startup, a sump pump can hit 3,400W, and a well pump 3,500W. A station that can't clear those spikes is useless no matter how many watt-hours it holds.

We drop anything without 20% surge headroom over a fridge compressor start, require a full 24 hours on the combined essentials load, then rank by price. Numbers here run lower than on our fridge-only page because you are powering more than one thing. Models that fall short of 24 hours are listed after those that clear it.

Test load: fridge plus essentials at 100 W running draw, 800 W startup surge . We require 960W of surge — a 20% margin over the bare spike — which eliminates 12 of our 87 models before ranking starts.

⚠️ The mistake buyers make

Manufacturers often lead with an 'X-Boost' or 'power lifting' number that isn't the true surge rating. Check the real surge spec — we list the verified figure for every model below.

How to size it

Add up what must stay on (fridge ~150W running, a few lights and devices ~100W), then size for 24 hours: roughly 2kWh for a one-day outage, 4kWh+ if you want to ride out a multi-day event.
